The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Staff Process Engineer within our Optical Process Engineering team, you will directly contribute to our light-field technology by deploying new processes into our eyepiece manufacturing flow. You will work with a cross-functional team of design engineers, research and development, metrology, quality, and manufacturing engineers to ensure process readiness for high-volume manufacturing of our waveguides.

This role is based in Plantation, FL, with frequent travel to Austin, TX, amounting to 50% of the time for the first year.

What you’ll do

  • Design, collect data, analyze, and compile reports on dry etch process development and hardware implementation.
  • Implement advanced analytics to predict process behaviors and outcomes, thereby enhancing decision-making and process optimization. Own statistical process control (SPC), which includes establishing process capability (CPK), creating control charts, and developing out-of-control action plans (OCAPs).
  • Troubleshoot a variety of complex process problems using structured tools such as Six Sigma, DMAIC, etc. Perform root cause analysis and resolve machine/process engineering issues.
  • Collaborate with R&D engineers to define new processes and capabilities, including frequent travel to our R&D facility for collaboration. Act as the primary liaison between process development and project management teams to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines.
  • Transfer R&D etch processes from our R&D facility to our manufacturing facility at our headquarters in Plantation, FL.
  • Develop comprehensive training programs for new processes and technologies for team members. Write procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for new processes, and provide training to production engineers and technicians, including PMs, kit changes, and chamber cleaning procedures.
  • Own and drive the Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA) by identifying gaps based on new manufacturing processes. Organize and lead Kaizen or continuous improvement events that engage employees in problem-solving and process enhancements.
  • Own process improvement programs that regularly review and optimize new processes, focusing on defect reduction, optical quality improvement, throughput improvement, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) improvement activities, and cost reduction.

The experience you bring

  • 8-10 years of professional experience in nanofabrication, specifically experience with dry etching and vacuum systems.
  • Engineering degree (bachelor's of science or higher) in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, or Materials Science or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • Proficiency in statistics and data analysis, as well as knowledge/experience of JMP or other statistical software, is preferred.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • M.S or Ph.D degree in Engineering disciplines
  • Metrology experience interpreting results from materials characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
