The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As an Electrical Equipment Engineer for the Product Development and Engineering Organization, you will be responsible for developing, upgrading, and maintaining custom manufacturing equipment for see-through augmented reality displays. You will collaborate with a high-performing multidisciplinary team and be encouraged to think creatively to solve electrical, mechanical, and system-level problems. This role supports eyepiece display development from early prototypes through the delivery of high-volume manufacturing equipment, involving various manufacturing processes found in optics, precision engineering, and semiconductor industries. You will have the opportunity to learn and work with a diverse set of equipment as your skills grow. The position offers a balanced mix of desk work and hands-on building, experimentation, and troubleshooting.

This role requires you to be onsite in Austin, TX.

What you’ll do

  • Communicate with engineers to understand their needs for new equipment designs and assist in solving equipment and hardware issues
  • Develop electrical and pneumatic specifications
  • Design electrical control panels and cable harnesses that meet equipment safety specifications
  • Perform power budgeting and select components for electrical equipment panels
  • Build equipment panels and cable assemblies
  • Troubleshoot multi-discipline equipment issues
  • Document designs and processes to ensure accuracy and reproducibility
  • Travel several times per year to install or upgrade equipment

The experience you bring

  • 3+ years of professional experience in designing and building control systems for equipment
  • Proven track record of working independently to diagnose and resolve equipment electrical problems
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience designing and working on equipment for clean room applications
  • Experience with optics, illumination, and cameras
  • Experience setting up and teaching robots
