Innovation Scientist
Lucy
This role is centered on identifying, documenting, and protecting new product innovations across nicotine and functional health categories. You will work closely with technical teams to develop and translate formulation, process, and product formats into defensible intellectual property.
The primary focus is preparing provisional patent filings, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, and building the technical support packages behind new inventions. This includes capturing experimental work, organizing supporting data, drafting technical descriptions, and coordinating with external patent counsel through the filing process.
You will also contribute to regulatory and technical documentation where it supports IP strategy. The ideal candidate is a strong technical writer who can understand and manage lab work, extract what is novel, and convert it into clear, structured, and defensible patent disclosures.
Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation of provisional patent drafts, including technical descriptions, figures, experimental examples, and claim support.
- Conduct freedom-to-operate and prior-art landscape reviews for new product and process concepts.
- Translate formulation, process, and product design work into structured invention disclosures.
- Build and maintain internal IP documentation, including invention capture workflows and supporting data packages.
- Coordinate with external patent counsel through drafting, filing, and response stages.
- Work cross-functionally with product development teams to develop and identify patentable subject matter.
- Organize experimental plans and third-party testing to generate data that strengthens patent filings.
- Contribute to regulatory or technical documentation where it supports IP positioning or product defensibility.
Expected Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in a technical role involving patent drafting, invention disclosures, technical regulatory writing, or R&D documentation.
- Demonstrated experience preparing or supporting provisional patent filings or working closely with patent counsel.
- Strong ability to interpret experimental work and convert it into clear, structured technical documentation.
- Background in a scientific or engineering discipline (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, or similar) — or equivalent hands-on innovation and documentation experience.
- Experience conducting prior-art searches or freedom-to-operate assessments is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with product formulation, manufacturing processes, or analytical testing in regulated consumer products (nicotine, supplements, food, pharma, or adjacent categories).
- Exceptional technical writing and information-organization skills.
- Highly self-directed and comfortable working in a remote, documentation-heavy environment.
