About The Role
The Genetics Lab Specialist I supports daily operations in the genetics laboratory by performing
molecular laboratory procedures related to preimplantation genetic testing by next-generation
sequencing. This position is responsible for accurate sample handling, preparation,
documentation, and testing support in accordance with established laboratory procedures and
quality standards.The Genetics Lab Specialist I works under the guidance of senior laboratory staff and
management to ensure clinical samples are processed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance
with laboratory policies.
Responsibilities
- Perform assigned aspects of preimplantation genetic testing by next-generation
sequencing, including DNA amplification, library preparation, sequencing setup, and
reporting support.
- Perform molecular-based laboratory procedures on clinical samples in accordance with
approved standard operating procedures.
- Accession clinical samples, including sample reception, verification, labeling,
documentation, and logging.
- Ensure proper sample identification, tracking, handling, and storage throughout the
testing process.
- Prepare reagents, consumables, and materials needed for laboratory workflows.
- Assist with operation, cleaning, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments and
equipment.
- Accurately document laboratory activities, test steps, reagent use, sample status, and any
deviations from standard procedures.
- Assist with Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Quality Inventory activities,
including QC checks, inventory tracking, reagent monitoring, and documentation review.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory work environment.
- Follow all laboratory safety procedures, HIPAA requirements, and applicable compliance
standards.
- Communicate sample issues, testing concerns, or workflow delays to senior staff or
laboratory management.
- Participate in training and competency activities as required.
- Perform additional duties or assignments as directed by management.
Who You Are
- Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry,
Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field preferred.
- Previous experience in a clinical, molecular, genetics, IVF, or reproductive genetics
laboratory preferred but not required.
- Experience with molecular biology techniques such as pipetting, PCR, DNA
amplification, or sequencing preparation is preferred.
- Must know how to pipette small amounts by viscosity.
- Familiarity with next-generation sequencing workflows.
- Familiarity with laboratory documentation, sample accessioning, and quality control
practices is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to follow written procedures, protocols, and laboratory instructions.
- Good organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to ask questions when clarification is
needed.
- Ability to handle confidential patient and clinical information appropriately.
- Basic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work in a clinical laboratory environment with biological specimens, reagents,
and laboratory equipment.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to perform repetitive pipetting and other fine-motor laboratory tasks.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment.
- May require occasional weekend, holiday, or adjusted schedule coverage based on
laboratory needs.
