The Associate Counsel, Regulatory Affairs, will provide legal research, advice and counsel, guidance, direction, and strategy for legislative, regulatory, and compliance matters for Assurant’s Global Housing business unit, which provides property insurance products and related services, such as lender-placed, renters, mobile home, flood, and specialty/innovation insurance. The position is also responsible for working with Government Relations to identify, track, analyze, and report on legislative, regulatory, and public policy issues that impact Assurant, its subsidiaries, products, services, and clients. This is a remote role.

What will my duties and responsibilities be in this job?

  • Reports to the Lead Counsel, Regulatory Affairs in the Legal Department.

  • Supports Lead Counsel, Regulatory Affairs in the management of significant and complex regulatory matters and legislative issues involving Assurant, its subsidiaries, and affiliates in various business areas including, but not limited to insurance, mortgage servicing, real estate, app-based delivery, and digital products and services.

  • Tracks legislation, proposed regulations, and pertinent public policy issues using the StateNet platform, communications from trade associations, and other external resources.

  • Researches, analyzes, and determines the effect of state and federal statutes, legislation, regulations, and court opinions on business practices and procedures.

  • Provides support to Government Relations in the formulation of company positions and on legislation, proposed regulations, and pertinent public policy issues.

  • Takes part in managing Assurant’s trade association relationships and interests and participates in monitoring the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and National Council of Insurance Legislators.

  • Fosters strong working relationships with business leaders, in-house business attorneys, the Government Relations team, Compliance Team and may advise same.

  • Presents legal perspectives and reports on applicable issues to internal clients.

What are the requirements needed for this position?

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

  • Current license to practice law in a US jurisdiction

  • A minimum of 3 years of legal experience, in a law firm or corporate law department, ideally handling legislative and/or regulatory matters in insurance, mortgage servicing, or other highly regulated industries.

  • Clear, effective oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to evaluate fact situations, identify legal issues, locate applicable legal authority, analyze and understand statutes, regulations, and case law, and recommend appropriate and defensible courses of action

  • Provide legal advice, counsel, and recommendations to senior management on significant issues

  • Work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

  • Handle stressful situations, and a heavy, diverse set of issues and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of the organization

  • Prepare and deliver written and oral presentations to colleagues including senior management, on legislative, regulatory, and legal issues.

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?

  • State or federal legislative or regulatory experience

  • Experience interacting with state insurance regulators, federal regulatory authorities, and/or state Attorneys General

  • Strong ability to influence without direct authority

  • Resilient, agile thinker

  • Ability to invite differing perspectives when addressing challenges

Travel-10% of the time to Assurant locations and trade association/regulator conferences

Pay Range:

$84,100.00 - $140,500.00

Any posted pay range considers a wide range of compensation factors, including candidate background, experience and work location, while also allowing for salary growth within the position.
