Your information

Account Information. You must provide a phone number, display name, profile photo, and a username when you create a Geneva account. We will only use your phone number for the purpose of sending you verification or login codes and will not display your phone number in the Services. You may optionally add other information to your account, such as a bio, mood status, and website. You can manage your personal information in the Profile section of the application by clicking on your profile photo.
Adding Your Location. When you create a Geneva account, we collect your approximate location. We will only use your approximate location for the purpose of recommending you groups to join around you. You may also choose to provide us with your precise location when you check into an IRL event created through Geneva that has enabled geo-fenced check-in. We will display your location (i.e. the city you live in) in your profile, but we will never share your precise location with other users.
Adding Your Birthday. When you create a Geneva account, we collect your birthday. We use your birthday to ensure you are 17+ and to display your age to other users on Geneva, making it easier for all users to connect with others in the same age range. We will display your age in your profile, but we will never share your exact birthday with other users. You may opt out of displaying your age in your profile.
Syncing Your Contacts. You may also choose to provide us with your friends’ contact information stored in your phone. Syncing your contacts means that you can directly invite your contacts to your group(s), receive notifications when one of your contacts signs up for the Services, and discover groups that your contacts have joined. We will ask your permission before syncing your contacts. If you do give us permission to sync your contacts, we will only sync and store their names and phone numbers. If you sync your contacts and later change your mind and un-sync contacts, we will delete their information from our servers. You can still use the Services without giving us access to your contacts, and you can still invite people to Geneva using group invite links.
Membership Applications. Permissioned members may optionally add “membership applications” to their groups on Geneva. This feature allows the leader(s) of a Geneva group to add a survey to collect information from prospective members before they join the group. Only permissioned members of the group can view member application responses, and Geneva does not collect member app responses. Permissioned users can ask us to manually export and send them a .csv of membership application responses, but we do not retain this data. If we receive an account deletion request from you, and another user(s) has exported your membership application responses, we will send a data removal request to that user(s).
Account Deletion. You may delete your account at any time in the application by visiting your User Settings or by contacting us at support@geneva.com. Deleting your account immediately removes all Account Information you have provided in your User Settings (including any information on your synced contacts). We will also remove your display name from any messages or chats you have sent within the Services to de-identify you; however, the messages and chats themselves will remain accessible in the Services by other users. We retain the messages and chats because we want to ensure that conversation histories remain available for users who are continuing to use the Services, even if an individual leaves the conversation. However, as long as your account is active, you are able to delete any messages that you send individually. We also automatically collect IP addresses when you use the Services for security purposes, but we will not use your IP address to track you or your use of the Services.
Group Deletion. You may delete your group at any time in the application by visiting your group settings or by contacting us at support@geneva.com. Deleting your group removes all messages, media, and every other piece of data your group stores on Geneva's servers. This action must be confirmed in group settings and cannot be undone.
User Support. When you contact Geneva Support at support@geneva.com, any personal data you may share with us is kept and used only for the purposes of researching the issue and contacting you about your case, and will never be shared with any third party.

3rd party information

We work with certain third-party service providers to provide certain Services but we only send your data to a few of them, as detailed below.
Twilio: We use Twilio to send a verification code to your phone number when you create a Geneva account and when you attempt to log into your account.
Imgix & Mux: We use Imgix for image processing every time you upload a photo in Geneva and Mux for video streaming every time you upload a video in Geneva.
Agora: We use a third party software development kit ("SDK") called Agora to provide voice and video services. The Agora servers do not store any voice or video content. The Agora SDK sends some information to the Agora servers for quality and problem reporting purposes. This information includes the date, time, duration of the call, and failure records. Agora does not collect any Personal Data, such as your login information, phone number, or other identifying information registered with Geneva.
iFramely: We use iFramely to render link previews, e.g. when a user includes a link to Instagram or Twitter in their messages or posts. The only data we pass to these providers is the URLs included within user messages.
Retool: While we don’t use Retool to power our application, we do use it to research certain user support requests and to assist in phone number change and recovery requests.
Notion: While we don't use Notion to power our application, we do use it to host public-facing content such as our Help Center that we have not yet moved onto our website.
We also work with a few analytics providers to monitor the performance of our application. We de-identify all user information that we pass to these providers so they do not track or store any personal information. The analytics providers we currently use are App Analytics, Google Analytics, Segment, Mixpanel, Sentry, and Datadog.
All aforementioned providers are bound by their Privacy Policies to safeguard your information. Over time, we plan to bring several of these services in-house to increase our ability to safeguard your data.
Other instances where Geneva may need to share your data
To meet any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request.
To enforce applicable Terms, including investigation of potential violations.
To detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security, or technical issues.
To protect against harm to the rights, property, or safety of Geneva, our users, or the public as required or permitted by law.
To share and/or transfer data in connection with the evaluation of and entry into a transaction. If we (or our assets) are acquired, if we go out of business, enter bankruptcy, or go through some other change of control, personal data could be one of the assets transferred to or acquired by a third party.
Storage and security
Where your data is stored
The Services are hosted and operated in the United States (“U.S.”) through Geneva and its service providers, and if you do not reside in the U.S., laws in the U.S. may differ from the laws where you reside. By using the Services, you acknowledge that any personal data about you, regardless of whether provided by you or obtained from a third party, is being provided to Geneva in the U.S. and will be hosted on U.S. servers and possibly other countries.
How we safeguard your data
We will take all reasonable precautions to safeguard your personal data from misuse, unauthorized access, modification or disclosure. We store certain personal data in order to facilitate critical features of the product including secure SMS-based login. Your personal information is secured and encrypted during transit using Transport Layer Security (TLS). When your data is stored by Geneva, we use computer systems with highly limited access housed in facilities with physical security measures (as provided by Amazon Web Services). Data is stored in encrypted form at rest to further prevent any unauthorized access or abuse.
We may need to share some personal information with third party providers; as an example, we will share your phone number with Twilio to send you SMS login codes. Whenever we share personal data with third parties, your information is always encrypted in transit using TLS. We only share the minimum amount of information required for these third parties to perform their services. We review each of these third parties to ensure that they are receiving and handling any personal information in the most secure manner, consistent with our own internal policies.
Access to any personal information is highly restricted in Geneva and only used in order to debug issues or handle support requests upon a direct request from a user(s). Any access to personal information is reviewed regularly and monitored to ensure no malicious or unwarranted access.
Access to and correction of your data
Depending on the laws where you reside, you may have rights with respect to access to and correction of your personal data that we hold. For more information about these rights, or to submit a request, please email legal@geneva.com. In some cases, we may also need you to provide us with additional information, which may include personal data, to verify your identity and the nature of your request.
Complaints
If you have any questions or concerns about our collection, use or disclosure of personal data, or if you believe we have not complied with this Privacy Policy or the privacy laws in your country or state, please contact us at legal@geneva.com. We will investigate the complaint and determine whether a breach has occurred and what action, if any, to take.
If you are not satisfied with our response to your complaint, you may have the right to make a complaint with the data privacy authority of your country or state.
