Makina Cafe is an established woman-owned Ethiopian-Eritrean Hospitality Company with a food truck, a catering kitchen, and a food stall on Governors Island. In the fall of 2025 Makina will be opening its first full-service brick and mortar location in Sunnyside/Long Island City, and the first Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurant in the famously diverse borough of Queens. Makina Café’s mission is to serve delicious East African food without fear of putting a spin on this time-honored cuisine, and to educate their public about the history and culture behind this revered, long-standing culinary tradition in a welcoming, hospitable environment.
We are looking for passionate line cooks for the commissary kitchen that are interested in learning about and cooking Ethiopian and Eritrean Cuisine. We will be serving traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean dishes as well as a few more modern takes on classics.

Responsibilities include:
- Prepare and cook authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean menu items according to established recipes, ensuring consistent quality and taste.
- Master the preparation of core ingredients, including various meats, legumes, and traditional spice blends (berbere, etc.).
- Set up and stock the kitchen station with all necessary supplies before and during service.
- Work collaboratively with the kitchen team to ensure timely and efficient delivery of food orders.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation, adhering to all food safety and sanitation regulations.
- Assist with inventory management and proper storage of food products.
- Monitor food levels and communicate with the chef regarding inventory and quality control.
Skills and Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Line Cook, with specific experience or a strong passion for Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine.
- Excellent understanding of cooking methods, ingredients, and equipment relevant to the cuisine.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively under pressure.
- Excellent time management and communication skills.
- A commitment to consistency in both flavor and presentation.
- A valid Food Handler's Certification is preferred.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 40 pounds.
