Black Barn is an American restaurant and the creation of Chef John Doherty, former Executive Chef of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria. Our “Modern Barn” is located at the north end of Madison Square Park in NYC’s Nomad neighborhood. Position Summary: Responsible for the baking of all breads in the Pastry Department in accordance with Black Barn's policies and procedures. Interacts with fellow employees, subordinates and supervisors in a polite and professional manner to ensure gracious hospitality
Duties and Responsibilities: including but not limited to
- Understands the Black Barn brand and the food products that support the brand
- Possesses an in-depth understanding of all baking and pastry techniques
- Portrays a positive and professional attitude
- Responsible for the compliance of all DOH Safety and Sanitation requirements
- Ensures the general cleanliness and repair of the pastry department
- Follow production schedule to meet both quality and demand
- Be proactive and attentive
- Maintain a positive, professional appearance and attitude at all times
- Knowledge of methods, procedures and quality standards relating to basic production
- Ability to successfully uphold quality and consistency in all items prepared and delivered
- Ability to multi-task and maintain organization in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Ability to visually inspect, taste and smell product to ensure freshness and quality
Minimum Education and Qualifications: including but not limited to
- Two-year associate degree (60 credit hours) in Pastry Arts or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds on a frequent basis and 40 pounds on an occasional basis
- Other physical requirements include but are not necessarily limited to reaching, grasping, and pounding, stretching, and kneading
- Must be skilled in the art of baking and have two to three years of baking experience in a high-volume production kitchen
- Must have knowledge in banquet pastry and baked goods, such as bread items, sweet dough, breakfast and coffee break pastry preparation, , cakes, pies and fruit tarts
- Must possess verbal and written communication skills
- Be able to lift at least 50 Ibs
- Food Handling Certificate.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Must be able to stand, lift and bend for extended periods of time..
- Role may include job duties or tasks requiring repetitive motion.
- Exposure to hot kitchen elements or cleaning materials.
- Must be able to work and remain focused in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule inclusive of varying shifts such as days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
